Zelenskyy Affirms Willingness for War-Time Polls After Remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy has stated he is prepared to organize a national election during the ongoing war, on the condition that the Verkhovna Rada and international allies allow it. This comment is a response to accusations from Donald Trump that he was clinging to power.

Obviously annoyed by the remarks from overseas, Zelenskyy emphasized that "The decision for the people of Ukraine, not for individuals from other nations, with all necessary respect to our friends."

Nevertheless, he promised to investigate options for holding a election in the next few months. "Since this topic is now being raised by the President of the U.S., our ally, I will respond succinctly: look, I am ready for elections," Zelenskyy said on Tuesday evening.

"In addition, I am requesting ... the U.S. to assist me, possibly in conjunction with European counterparts, to provide security for the polls, and subsequently within the following 60-90 day period Ukraine will be ready to organize the elections. I individually have the desire and readiness for this," he added.

The U.S. President's Assertions and Ukrainian Legal Reality

The comments were voiced by Trump in a lengthy interview conducted by Politico earlier on Tuesday. "Ukraine haven't had an election in a long time," claimed the U.S. president. "Consider this, they speak of a democracy, but it becomes a situation where it's not a democracy any more."

Zelenskyy's presidential term expired in May of last year, but the nation's constitution prohibits elections in a time of wartime. Furthermore, his rivals have stated repeatedly that security and political considerations make it impossible holding an election while the war continues.

"Holding a vote would only create damage," stated an opposition MP. "Zelenskyy is the commander-in-chief, and the country is in a position where we don't have that possibility, whatever disagreements we might have with him. It would only aid the opponent," he added.

Practical and Legal Obstacles

Zelenskyy highlighted two primary problems that require solutions: the practical challenge of enabling soldiers, millions of refugees, and those living under occupation to vote, and secondly, how to legally conduct a vote when a state of war is in effect.

He asked for counsel from allies on securing the elections, and from members of parliament on how to amend the constitution to allow a vote. "{I am awaiting proposals from partners, I am expecting ideas from our MPs, and I am prepared to proceed with the elections," said Zelenskyy.

Wider Diplomatic Context

Zelenskyy made these remarks while traveling back to Ukraine after completing a series of visits to various European capitals. This comes as the U.S. administration has reportedly increasing pressure on Kyiv to agree to a settlement.

Recently, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., suggested at a conference that Zelenskyy was dragging out the war due to concerns of being ousted. He also suggested that his father might "disengage" from Ukraine if the war continues. "{It's not true. But it's not entirely wrong," said Trump, when asked about his son's claim.

There are indications that the U.S. has proposed Ukraine should cede the Donbas region to secure peace, a proposal that would be extremely controversial within Ukraine. Furthermore, there is presently no evidence that Russia is prepared to sign any agreement, even one that might seem beneficial to Moscow.
