Storm Claudia Impact: Clean-up Efforts Continue as Arctic Blast Approaches

First responders are continuing their efforts to address widespread flooding caused by the recent storm.

A significant emergency was declared in Monmouth, southeastern Wales, where residents were rescued or evacuated from flooded homes after torrential rain on the weekend.

On Sunday, four severe flood warnings, indicating a danger to life, remained active, alongside 41 flood warnings in England. River levels on the Monnow surpassed previous records, surpassing levels seen during previous severe weather events.

Homes, businesses, transportation systems, and energy infrastructure all suffered from significant flooding in parts of Wales, authorities confirmed.

Reports indicated that approximately twenty properties in parts of England were flooded due to the severe conditions, including some in Cumbria.

As Storm Claudia withdraws, a cold snap is forecast to sweep across the United Kingdom, bringing freezing temperatures and potential snow and ice.

Saturday night, the country experienced its coldest night since spring, with mercury readings plunging to minus seven degrees Celsius in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland.

A temperature drop of around 5C will change unseasonably warm autumn readings to lower figures nationwide, with peak temperatures on Sunday reaching around 11 degrees in the southeastern region before further cooling at the week's beginning.

"As Storm Claudia moves south, high pressure to the northwest will drive a chilly Arctic air across the UK," a weather expert stated. "This will bring much colder weather than recently, and, though mostly dry, there is also a potential of wintry hazards. Frost across many areas are anticipated, with readings dipping as low as minus seven in certain locations next week, and daytime highs staying in single figures."

He added, "Couple this with a brisk northerly wind, and there will be a significant chill factor. This marks a notable change after a prolonged spell of unseasonable warmth."

Public health agencies have activated a cold weather alert for several English regions from the start of the week, while flood management bodies have warned that flooding may persist throughout the coming days.

The low-temperature warning is effective from Monday morning until Friday morning, covering the East Midlands, western Midlands, North East, North West, and Yorkshire region.
