One police sergeant who rushed to the aid of a fellow officer who was ambushed by a blade-wielder was granted the Royal Recognition for Bravery.
Sergeant Tim Ansell struggled against 27-year-old Jacob Brown after he pressed a blade to the throat of his partner Sgt Marc Foster.
Brown began the violence as the law enforcement personnel and their partner, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were talking to a motorist subsequent to a vehicle incident in Whalley Range in summer 2023.
Brown stabbed and slashed the two Sgt Ansell and Sergeant Foster before Police Constable Wolstencroft incapacitated him with a electric weapon.
"Officer stabbed," PC Wolstencroft was heard to say over his radio.
Bodyworn and dashcam footage released by the police department depicted Brown, wearing in black with a hood up, run up to Sgt Foster from behind with a knife extended.
He struck the policeman who tripped and dropped to the ground, before Sergeant Ansell stepped in and attempted to subdue him to the floor even though being repeatedly struck with the blade.
Police Constable Wolstencroft deployed his electric weapon and waited for a open target, bringing the fight to an end.
Sergeant Ansell stated audibly: "Please provide help on my throat now, I got knifed in the neck."
Sgt Ansell suffered two open wounds to his throat and more injuries to his arms and body, while Sergeant Foster suffered knife wounds.
The department stated Sgt Foster utilized his palms to control his partner's blood loss prior to paramedics came.
The new award follows after the three officers received internal Courage Honors in fall 2023 and the John Egerton Bravery Award from the area union branch in April 2024.
They were also awarded a Area Bravery Award in July 2024.
"The efforts of all three officers in the end rescued each other and meant no civilians experienced any wounds."
Brown was sentenced to an secure medical confinement in spring 2024, according to the department.
