Doris Included in Irish Selection While Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has included captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn internationals, however lock McCarthy misses out.

Doris, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be fit to face New Zealand in the US on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in the summer.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash are not included because of injury, and full-back Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery after the summer tour.

Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities states uncapped provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "backup".

Following facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous meeting, the team host Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely experienced squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is remains up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's URC game at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected as Farrell deciding not to selecting the province's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started two of his province's three United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in the second string's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a cap.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, while veteran Northern province lock Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris if the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on Tuesday.
